WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Sunday that five patients have recovered from the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain in eastern Congo, marking a significant milestone in the outbreak.
Speaking at the opening of a new treatment center in Bunia, Tedros emphasized early treatment is key, even without an approved vaccine. The WHO reports at least 906 suspected cases and 223 deaths in Congo, with 134 confirmed cases and 18 deaths across Congo and Uganda.
Doctors Without Borders warns the virus is spreading faster than the response, hindered by community anger over burial protocols and ongoing rebel attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces and M23 groups.

Local health officials express hope, noting the current strain is less complex than past outbreaks. They urge community cooperation to contain the virus.
