A new thermostable tetanus-diphtheria vaccine, SPVX02, developed by UK biotech Stablepharma, maintained full potency after two years of storage at 30°C in early human trials.
The phase 1 study was conducted with support from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) at its Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre (VDEC). Current vaccines require strict cold chain logistics; WHO estimates up to half are lost due to temperature failures.
Dr. Bassam Hallis, Deputy Director at VDEC, called the results a landmark contribution to global public health innovation. Dr. Karen O’Hanlon, Stablepharma’s COO, emphasized SPVX02’s dual impact: expanding access in low-resource settings and reducing climate-related supply chain emissions.
Phase 2 trials-comparing SPVX02 to an approved comparator vaccine-are set to begin in the coming months.
