For the fourth year, a simple "mosquito death bucket" trap is proving effective against backyard pests. This DIY solution utilizes mosquito dunks to create a breeding ground that is lethal to larvae, offering a more effective alternative to foggers and sprays.

The "bucket of doom" targets mosquito larvae using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a naturally occurring bacterium. Bti is toxic to mosquito larvae, fungus gnats, and blackflies but is safe for mammals, birds, fish, and beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. The trap is designed to be the only standing water source, maximizing its effectiveness.

Creating the trap involves a few simple steps. Gather a 5-gallon bucket, mosquito dunks or granules containing Bti, and organic matter such as leaves or hay. Fill the bucket partway with water, add the organic matter to attract mosquitoes, and then add a quarter of a mosquito dunk or the amount specified on the package. The dunks are designed to release Bti over time, killing larvae as they hatch.

Maintenance is minimal, requiring a new dunk to be added monthly. The cost is minimal, estimated at under $7 for a summer's worth of protection, including the bucket. It is crucial to continue eliminating other sources of standing water around the property for optimal results. While results are not instantaneous, consistent use and maintenance of the bucket can significantly reduce mosquito populations over the season.
