Edmonton's mosquito population has surged following heavy rainfall, leading to the highest numbers recorded in weeks. As of June 20, traps caught 534 mosquitoes, up from just five on May 23, indicating a staggering increase of over 10,000%.

According to Loki Synman, curator at the Royal Alberta Museum, over 100 mm of rain offers perfect conditions for breeding. “A sunny period after lots of rain will have very active mosquitoes seeking a quick blood meal,” Synman stated.
With additional rain forecasted, biologist Mike Jenkins warns that numbers could worsen, noting that most local species thrive as floodwater lays eggs around vegetation near ponds.
The City of Edmonton now focuses on targeted spraying in ditches and habitats, having ceased aerial spraying practices.
