Thirteen cases of meningitis and septicaemia have been reported in Kent, UK, between March 13-15, 2026, including two deaths.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is distributing antibiotics to students in the Canterbury area to curb the spread of meningococcal disease. The specific strain remains unidentified.
Trish Mannes, UKHSA Regional Deputy Director for the South East, emphasized that symptoms-fever, severe headache, rash unblanching under glass, cold extremities, seizures-can progress rapidly. She warned that early signs are often mistaken for flu or a hangover.
Students are urged to monitor friends who go to bed unwell and seek urgent medical help immediately via NHS 111 or A&E.
