Mars Petcare US has issued a voluntary nationwide recall for two lots of Pedigree-branded dog food. The recall, announced July 2, affects 13.2 oz cans of High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor.

The company states the cans were previously identified as contaminated with "sharp metal and plastic foreign material" and were supposed to be disposed of. Instead, they were "fraudulently diverted" into the U.S. market. Mars Petcare is working with federal authorities to investigate.

While no injuries have been reported, the company warns the fragments could cause choking, lacerations, or gastrointestinal blockages in pets. Consumers should stop using the product immediately and contact Pedigree at 1-800-525-5273 for a replacement.

Pet owners who believe their animal consumed the food should consult a veterinarian. Symptoms of choking or internal injury include drooling, gagging, vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.
