Ontario officials have initiated a major overhaul of the provincial health infrastructure, launching a central electronic system to manage medical records.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones stated the initiative aims to eliminate redundant paperwork and ensure seamless data sharing across hospitals, labs, and primary care clinics. The project targets full connectivity for all residents by 2029.
In a move to prevent past fiscal mismanagement, the plan incorporates oversight from integrity and privacy commissioners. Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy announced an additional $325 million allocation for primary care support. Participation remains voluntary for patients.
The government is currently soliciting vendor proposals to manage the infrastructure, drawing lessons from a previous eHealth scandal where billions were wasted over two decades.
