The parents of Zachary Miron, who died in 2024 after drinking Red Bull while on ADHD medication, returned to the National Assembly this week as calls grow for Quebec to ban energy drink sales to minors.
A petition launched by the family has gathered over 35,000 signatures. Quebec solidaire MNA Guillaume Cliche-Rivard presented it during question period, receiving broad applause.
The Quebec Order of Pharmacists has now joined the movement, recommending that pharmacies remove energy drinks from retail spaces. Familiprix pharmacies have already complied, pulling the products entirely.
Jean-François Desgagné, president of the order, said such drinks are inappropriate for pharmacies and questioned their sale in sports venues like arenas.
The Canadian Beverage Association opposes the restrictions, arguing they lack scientific backing and that energy drinks are already federally regulated.
Health Minister Sonia Belanger says the government wants to make the right decision before the current legislative session ends.
