The Ontario County Public Health Department in Canandaigua, New York is investigating a suspected locally acquired hantavirus case. Health officials confirm there is absolutely no connection to the MV Hondius luxury cruise ship outbreak that has sickened multiple people and left three dead.

As of May 13, the World Health Organization reports 11 hantavirus cases linked to the cruise outbreak, including eight confirmed cases. The Andes hantavirus strain involved in the cruise outbreak has raised concerns due to its potential for rare human-to-human transmission.

Hantavirus infections remain rare in New York. The virus spreads through aerosolized rodent urine, feces, and nesting materials. Residents are urged to wear gloves and masks when cleaning enclosed spaces like attics and sheds.

The cruise outbreak began after the MV Hondius departed Argentina on April 1. Investigators believe initial infection may have come from rodent exposure during birdwatching excursions before boarding the ship.
