The peptide market is experiencing a surge in interest as GLP-1 weight-loss medications gain traction. Peptides-short chains of amino acids marketed for weight loss, muscle building, and injury recovery-are largely unregulated and sold through compounding pharmacies and unverified vendors. The FDA will evaluate whether to loosen regulations on several peptides this summer.
Dr. Alex Tatem, a board-certified urologist, says GLP-1s are "incredibly effective" but the single-dose weekly pen doesn't suit all patients. Compounding pharmacies have stepped in to offer flexible dosing, creating a clash with commercial pharmaceutical companies. Tatem warns that FDA regulation could limit patient access to customized medications. In September 2023, the FDA tightened regulation of 19 peptides, making them illegal to manufacture and inadvertently fueling interest. Peptides may help with injury recovery, skin rejuvenation, sleep improvements, and boosting natural growth hormones, but experts advise against gray-market products.
