A Canadian court has approved a massive $7.5 billion class-action settlement against Danone Canada following a deadly 2024 Listeria outbreak. The contamination was traced to refrigerated plant-based beverages sold under the Silk and Great Value brands. Public health officials confirmed the outbreak caused 20 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and three deaths.

The Superior Court of Quebec approved the national settlement in April on behalf of consumers who purchased or ingested recalled products after July 8, 2024. While Danone Canada denies all allegations and liability, the agreement establishes a six-tier compensation structure. Payouts range from $400 for minor symptoms to $300,000 for wrongful death claims.

Claimants must provide evidence matching their compensation level. Non-hospitalized individuals reporting physical illness or psychological harm may receive between $400 and $7,000 based on symptom duration. Hospitalized patients without permanent complications are eligible for up to $30,000, while those with severe or permanent injuries may receive up to $150,000. Estates of deceased victims qualify for the maximum payout.

Eligible consumers have until October 16, 2026, to submit claims through the official settlement portal. Required documentation varies by tier, ranging from simple purchase declarations to detailed medical records for severe cases. This resolution addresses one of the most significant food safety liabilities in recent North American history.
