Sleep tracking apps may heighten anxiety in people with insomnia, according to a study from the University of Bergen. Researchers found that while some users gained insights into their sleep habits, those with insomnia experienced more stress and worry.

The study, involving over 1,000 participants, showed that younger adults were more affected by app feedback, reporting both benefits and concerns. The researchers warned that excessive focus on app data could worsen sleep quality.

They advised users to understand how their devices work and consider removing them at night if they cause stress. Sleep tracking has become a booming industry, with the U.S. market reaching $5 billion in 2023.
