A third British national is suspected of contracting hantavirus in connection with an outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius, according to the UK government.

The patient is currently on the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, where the ship stopped in mid-April.

Two other British men have confirmed cases. One remains in stable condition in the Netherlands after being evacuated Wednesday. The other is in intensive care in South Africa, flown there last month.

The MV Hondius is expected to dock in the Canary Islands this weekend. A chartered plane will fly remaining British passengers and crew back to the UK. None show symptoms but will isolate upon return.

Contact tracing is underway in several countries, including Switzerland and the Netherlands. The World Health Organization called it a serious incident but stressed the risk to the public is low.

The origin of the outbreak is unknown. Hantavirus typically spreads from rodents, but experts believe human-to-human transmission may have occurred through close contact.
