Walking is a physiological necessity for survival, akin to breathing and sleeping, according to movement expert Courtney Conley on The Jordan Harbinger Show. Conley argues that integrating low-to-moderate intensity walking throughout the day stimulates every system in the body, from glucose metabolism to emotional regulation.
She cites research showing that achieving 5,000 to 7,000 steps daily can significantly reduce the risk of depression. For sedentary individuals, adding just 500 steps-a five-minute micro walk-can lower all-cause mortality.
Walking after meals is particularly powerful. It works with the pancreas to clear glucose from the bloodstream, making metabolic processes more efficient. Conley warns that one hour of exercise cannot negate the damage of prolonged sitting.
Many people develop walking inefficiencies as they age, which she calls abnormal and worth addressing. Since gait reflects both physical and emotional states, changes can signal underlying health issues.
Conley emphasizes that walking is a safe way to load tissues, muscles, and tendons, making it a foundational health strategy for longevity.
