Audi will appoint a new Formula One team principal to replace Jonathan Wheatley, following his sudden departure. Mattia Binotto, Audi’s F1 project head and former Ferrari boss, confirmed the move at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Wheatley, who joined Sauber (now Audi) in April 2023, cited personal reasons for leaving. He has been linked to Aston Martin, where former Red Bull colleague Adrian Newey runs operations.
Binotto, now juggling dual roles, stressed he cannot shoulder all responsibilities alone. His focus remains on factory-based car and powertrain development. A race weekend support leader will be named soon.
“His exit caught us off guard,” Binotto admitted. “We released him because he couldn’t commit long-term.”
The team is regrouping quickly ahead of this weekend’s race in Japan.
