Billy Donovan has stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, the team announced Tuesday. Donovan opted out of his contract for next season, stating his decision allows a new leader to build the organization's staff.

Team owner Jerry Reinsdorf expressed his desire for Donovan to return but acknowledged the coach's decision prioritized the franchise's future and the incoming head of basketball operations. Reinsdorf praised Donovan for his character and impact on the organization.

Donovan, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, compiled a 226-256 record with the Bulls, leading them to one playoff appearance. He previously coached the Oklahoma City Thunder for five seasons, achieving a 243-157 record and reaching the playoffs each year.
