A Copa Libertadores match between Colombia's Independiente Medellin and defending champions Flamengo was abandoned on Thursday after home fans lit flares and threw objects onto the pitch just after kick-off.

The teams were sent to the dressing rooms and the stadium was evacuated before CONMEBOL officially called off the game.

Local media reports indicate that Independiente Medellin fans were protesting against the club’s management due to a recent string of poor performances.

Flamengo’s director of football, Jose Boto, stated: "The responsibility is not ours, the regulations are clear. The home team failed to guarantee security." The club expects to be awarded a victory and three points under CONMEBOL rules.

Flamengo currently leads Group A, with Independiente Medellin sitting third behind Argentina's Estudiantes.
