Controversial officiating hit the WWE ring at Clash in Italy on Sunday. The Undisputed Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther ended in dispute when referee Dan Engler counted a pin despite Gunther's foot clearly under the ropes.
Rhodes hit Gunther with a second Cross Rhodes and pinned him. Replays showed Gunther's foot under the rope, which should have broken the count, but Engler kept counting. The champion held the shoulders down for three, stunning Gunther, who stormed up the entrance ramp in protest.
This was Rhodes' second title defense since defeating Drew McIntyre. Gunther earned the shot after beating Royce Keys but refused to sign the contract until Keys was about to take the opportunity. Now Gunther has a legitimate grievance about the officiating. It's unclear when he will get another title chance.
