PARIS -- French tennis showman Gael Monfils bid an emotional farewell to Roland Garros on Monday, falling to compatriot Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0 in a first-round thriller that stretched into a fifth set.

The 39-year-old, who will retire at the end of the season, struggled early but mounted a spirited comeback, winning the third and fourth sets before Gaston steadied to blank him in the decider.

"I love you all so much," Monfils said after a tribute video showcased his flair and connection with Parisian fans. "Every year I play here, I get goosebumps. This tournament is magical."

Tributes poured in from legends like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, celebrating Monfils' two decades of charismatic tennis.
