John Cena’s final in-ring run - a dramatic heel turn, a 17th championship, and a loss to Gunther - ended not with a victory lap but a defeat that has split fans. Cena told filmmaker Adam Glyn the polarizing reaction was the ideal finale.

"I think with the last match, the audience was polarized. There were people who understood and were entertained. There were people who were so in the moment and reacted with such passion, it was like a microcosm of my career. The audience was split. I can’t think of a better way to close the chapter. It defines what I did."

Cena has not left WWE entirely. He has announced the John Cena Classic - a showcase event for NXT talent - and hand-picked the competitors for his final card. He remains "fully invested" in the company's future.
