New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay criticized the use of military figures and patriotic rhetoric in sports, particularly during the World Baseball Classic. He expressed unease over Team USA players emphasizing patriotism and bringing in a Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden to speak to them.
Kay argued that the military, not athletes, truly represents the United States. He stated that international competition should not be seen as a reflection of national superiority.
Team USA manager Mark DeRosa defended the decision, saying it was meant to honor service members. However, Kay and other critics found the connection between sports and military symbolism problematic.
