Cooper Lutkenhaus, 17, made history Sunday in Poland by becoming the youngest male athlete ever to win an individual title at the World Indoor Championships. The American captured gold in the 800 meters with a time of 1:44.24, edging out Belgium’s Eliott Crestan.
He broke the previous age record held by Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman, who was 18 years and 61 days old when he won the same event in 2012.
“I came out here thinking I probably wasn't the favourite,” Lutkenhaus said, “but any time I step into a final, I believe I have a chance to win.”
His victory helped push Team USA to the top of the medal table with five golds-Britain followed with four, its best-ever indoor performance.
