Ferrari has unveiled its first electric vehicle, the Luce, designed by iPhone designer Sir Jony Ive. The launch, attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Leo, has sparked a massive backlash. Critics, including former Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, say the car risks destroying the brand's legend. High-end dealer Shaun Baker calls it the "Loser." Italy's deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini questioned the innovation, wondering what founder Enzo Ferrari would say.

The Luce does 0-60mph in about 2.5 seconds with a top speed over 190mph, but critics say it lacks the low-slung profile and roaring engine of a typical Ferrari. CEO Benedetto Vigna defends the car, noting strong buyer interest and a fair price for innovation. Ferrari previously faced similar criticism with its Purosangue SUV, which ultimately sold well.

The backlash comes as the global auto industry struggles with Chinese competition and shifting EV demand. Rival Lamborghini has scrapped its EV program, and other brands like Porsche, Honda, and Ford have scaled back. Ferrari is betting the Luce will attract younger, EV-open buyers and new customers.
