As solar energy costs continue to fall, fossil fuels are becoming increasingly expensive-especially for developing nations.
A recent analysis by SolarPower Europe shows that Europe has saved more than €100 million per day since March 1 by relying on solar power, totaling over €3 billion in savings.
This shift is particularly impactful for smaller emerging economies struggling to access reliable electricity. Over 700 million people lack power, and many in the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) countries face unreliable grids.
Energy think tank Ember reports that solar and battery technologies are now cheaper than traditional fossil fuels. Off-grid solar-battery systems outperform grid extensions for remote areas, and electric technologies like heat pumps have dropped in cost by up to 95%.
"This is an epochal shift," says Daan Walter of Ember Futures. "Clean energy can now offer development, independence, and abundance where fossil fuels once dominated."
With solar penetration surpassing that of the U.S. in some CVF nations, the world is entering a new era of affordable, scalable clean energy.
