Waymo will supply thousands of used robotaxi batteries to B2U Storage Solutions for stationary energy storage projects. The partnership, announced June 4, gives B2U access to batteries from Waymo's fleet that are no longer suitable for automotive use. These units will be repurposed into large-scale storage facilities that capture excess renewable energy and release it during peak demand.
The deal supports a circular economy: batteries that once powered Waymo's vehicles will bolster the same local grids that charge them. B2U's Lancaster facility in Los Angeles County will receive the batteries, deploying them to projects across California and Texas, including a 24 MWh site in Bexar County supporting Waymo's San Antonio operations.
B2U CEO Freeman Hall noted the fleet's high mileage leads to faster degradation, but even after years of use, batteries retain significant capacity. Waymo's nearly 4,000 vehicles, primarily Jaguar I-Pace and Zeekr Ojai models, could generate hundreds of megawatt-hours of storage capacity. B2U already manages over 4,000 EV battery packs across its projects.
