Dr. Peter Stafford, the American physician who contracted Ebola while on a humanitarian mission in Congo, has returned to the United States and is recovering well. He arrived Monday with his wife, Rebekah, and their four children, according to the missionary organization Serge.

Stafford has been free of the virus since May 30. He was initially evacuated to a hospital in Berlin on May 20 and discharged on June 6.

"I am feeling well and thankful to be reunited with Rebekah and the kids," Stafford said in a statement.

His wife, also a physician, and their children never developed symptoms during their quarantine.

The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which no vaccines or treatments exist. Health officials report 782 confirmed cases and 178 deaths in Congo, with the outbreak now spreading into neighboring Uganda.
