Armed men have kidnapped James Boyard, the chief of staff to Haiti’s defense minister and inspector general of police, in Port-au-Prince. This incident marks the highest-ranking abduction in the Caribbean nation in recent years.
Reports confirm that Boyard’s wife and six-year-old daughter were also seized during the Thursday abduction. Sources familiar with the case state that kidnappers have already issued a ransom demand. Boyard is a key figure currently tasked with rebuilding Haiti's armed forces under Defense Minister Mario Andrésol.
Security analysts warn that gangs are increasingly targeting public officials and dual nationals in previously safe zones to secure higher ransoms or deter government offensives. United Nations data indicates gang violence has caused over 2,300 deaths and displaced nearly 1.5 million people this year alone.
