Chad's President Idris Mahamat Déby has ordered the military to retaliate against future attacks from Sudan following a drone attack that killed at least 17 people and injured others attending a funeral in the border town of Tiné.
President Déby, dressed in military uniform, convened an emergency security meeting on Wednesday evening, ordering the military to be on high alert and announcing a 'total closure' of the border with Sudan.
The attack, which residents say targeted mourners gathered for a funeral ceremony, has been condemned by various officials. The government spokesman stated that Chad is strengthening its defense and security forces and is prepared to act within Sudanese territory if necessary.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which controls much of the western Darfur region bordering Chad, is suspected of carrying out the attack but denies involvement, blaming Sudan's army instead.
