Health Canada has approved the second generic version of semaglutide, the medication that powers blockbuster drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. This latest authorization is for a product manufactured by Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex.

The move follows the approval this week of the first generic semaglutide, produced by India's Dr. Reddy's Laboratories. Both injectables are approved for once-weekly treatment of Type 2 diabetes in adults.
The approvals are expected to increase patient access and reduce costs for the widely prescribed medication class.
