Nighttime phone use represents the biggest threat to quality sleep among Americans, according to sleep expert Dr. Wendy Troxel.
About 90% of Americans use their phones in bed, creating serious sleep disruptions through blue light exposure and stimulating content.
Blue light suppresses melatonin production, the hormone responsible for sleep regulation. However, the addictive nature of social media content poses an equally significant problem.
"Social media is designed to be addictive, so that you can't put that phone down," Troxel explained.
The expert recommends keeping phones more than arm's reach from the bed. She suggests making feet touch the floor before using any device.
This approach creates behavioral friction, making the automatic habit of phone scrolling more difficult to execute.
