The Manitoba government is implementing measures to enhance healthcare services, including the establishment of two new committees. Legislation before the legislature will create a committee to determine appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios and identify critical care areas subject to these standards.

A separate bill will empower the health minister to set staffing and operational benchmarks for healthcare providers, with the explicit goal of eliminating mandatory overtime for nurses. This framework aims to bolster nursing ranks and improve patient care. Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara emphasized that patient safety and care quality are top priorities, noting the government has hired additional healthcare professionals. The province is examining successful strategies implemented in British Columbia. While overtime may still be permitted in critical emergency situations or major disasters, the legislation seeks to reform current practices.
