Jeff Bezos declared at VivaTech in Paris that humanity must establish permanent lunar colonies to save Earth from industrial degradation. Speaking with Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp, the Amazon founder argued that shifting heavy manufacturing off-world is the only path to balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.

Bezos emphasized that the Moon serves as a critical staging post before Mars due to its proximity and shallow gravity. He noted that lifting materials from the lunar surface requires 28 times less energy than launching from Earth, making it an efficient supplier for deep space missions. Unlike the Apollo program’s geopolitical sprint, this initiative aims for permanent settlement driven by economic necessity.

The strategy relies on harvesting lunar water ice for propellant and utilizing surface minerals for infrastructure. Bezos envisions massive orbital habitats and off-world chip manufacturing, concepts originally proposed by physicist Gerard O'Neill. Mars colonization will follow only after this lunar foundation is secure.

Bezos also highlighted Prometheus, his new AI venture designed to compress engineering development cycles using specialized data. He concluded that invention remains the primary driver of civilization wealth, calling the current era the most target-rich environment in history for entrepreneurs.
