A high-level people smuggler identified in a BBC investigation has been arrested in Iraqi Kurdistan. Kardo Jaf, also known as Kardo Ranya, is suspected of transporting thousands of migrants illegally across the English Channel into the UK. He was arrested on human trafficking charges by the Kurdistan Regional Security Agency and remains in custody.
The 28-year-old Iraqi Kurd operated under several aliases to evade international arrest warrants. The BBC's Sue Mitchell and Rob Lawrie uncovered his real identity, leading to the arrest. Jaf denied the allegations, claiming he only advised people on leaving Iraq.
Jaf's network is believed to control most of the illegal cross-Channel journeys. The UK's National Crime Agency confirmed the arrest, calling it a significant step in dismantling the smuggling network.
Small-boat crossings have become the primary method for illegal entry into the UK since 2020, with nearly all arrivals claiming asylum.
